Stories to Inspire

Vijairaj Giri

Image of Vijairaj Giri and childrenVijairaj Giri and his wife met with a serious road accident in 1999. His wife was killed and he suffered multiple fractures on his left arm and leg. Overnight, his three young children have only a disabled parent to depend on. Life became a struggle from then on. Vijairaj was unable to resume work as a taxi driver. Moreover, he has to look after his 3 young children who are studying in primary school. They have no household income but manage on financial assistance from social welfare agencies. "It was very difficult in the beginning", said Vijairaj, "but we are learning to accept it. We just want to move on".

He now walks with the help of a donated crutch. He finds walking difficult because he is unable to rest his weight on his left leg. The bones around the left knee area were badly broken and they did not heal properly. Sometimes, his knee could swell for days.

The Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) learned about his case and has been working very closely with Vijairaj and his family since. His 3 children receive financial help through the SPD Education Programme for students with disabilities or students with parents who are disabled. A social worker is assigned to Vijairaj and his family to provide them the services and support so that Vijairaj will find it easier to cope with the demands of life and his children will have a level playing field in their education.

Yes, I would like to make a donation to help Vijairaj Giri and others like him.
