Stories to Inspire

Soo Tho Yin Fong

Image of Soo Tho Yin Fong reading bookSoo Tho Yin Fong was diagnosed with Spinocerebellar Ataxia in 2000. This disease causes the wasting away of the cerebellum which is at the base of the brain and this leads to loss of muscle coordination and control. This same condition devastated Yin Fong’s father and brother and made them take their own lives. It also left her younger sister bed-bound, unable to speak and reliant on a gastronomy tube for feeding.

Yin Fong herself is now a wheelchair user. She needs help with feeding, dressing, showering and toileting. Her speech is slow and slurred.

When she was first diagnosed with the disease, Yin Fong was confined at home with just the four walls for company. It was too difficult for her to use public transport. Doctors have diagnosed Yin Fong’s disease to worsen as time goes by and her condition will deteriorate. Thankfully, Yin Fong is now able to attend the SPD Day Activity Programme where SPD’s social workers are working with Yin Fong and her family to provide services that will improve her quality of life.

Yes, I would like to make a donation to help Soo Tho Ying Fong and others like her.
