Disability policies today are the result of developments over the past 200 years. They generally emphasise the rights of persons with disabilities to the same opportunities as other citizens of the countries they are in.
The United Nations, World Health Organization and other such organisations are working towards ensuring equal opportunities and promoting the rights and dignity of people with disabilities. They are working to encourage all countries to raise awareness in society about people with disabilities, their rights, needs, potential and their contribution.
We should work towards inclusion and remove all barriers preventing people with disabilities from full participation in all areas of a community. This covers all areas including the social arena, in activities, and in public infrastructure such as pavements and roads, in the transport system, and the built environment such as buildings and tunnels.
