Different kinds of disabilities impair people in different ways, and they can range from severe to moderate to mild. Disabilities can also be temporary or permanent.
Physical Disabilities – a person with physical disabilities is one who is impaired in his physical function in the upper or lower limbs, or whose mobility or dexterity is affected. A person could be born with the impairment or acquire it through old age, an accident or illness.
Sensory Disabilities – people with sensory disabilities have difficulties with their sight and/or hearing. They could be born with the impairment or acquire it through an illness, accident or with age.
Learning Disabilities – people with learning disabilities have trouble learning or discerning information.
Developmental Disabilities – people with developmental disabilities are impaired mentally or physically, and the impairment is usually significant and lifelong. It occurs in the years of development, which is before they turn 22 years old.
Intellectual Disabilities – people with intellectual disabilities are those whose cognitive functioning is impaired. In Singapore, those with an IQ of 70 and below are defined as people with intellectual disabilities.
