What is Assistive Technology (AT)?
Assistive Technology (AT) enables individuals to overcome the limitations of their disabilities so that they can function effectively in work, school and play. If students experience difficulties writing because of poor hand control, they may use an alternative keyboard or a specialised mouse or an on-screen keyboard with scanning. If they are unable to see the screen because of visual impairments, they may use a screen reader. If they are unable to talk, they may be able to use an Augmentative and Alternative Communication device.
Who is involved in the AT intervention process?
AT teams are involved in the selection, prescription, acquisition of the AT device. They work with the client to integrate the AT successfully. The client should always be an integral part of the AT team.
