Sheltered Workshop
The Sheltered Workshop provides employment and vocational training through sub-contract work like packaging, letter-shopping, tagging of products and the like, where trainees can earn an allowance as they work. Through the sub-contract jobs with various organisations, trainees have the opportunity to work on site at the client company in a real work environment, thus improving their future employment prospects.
Admission Criteria
The Sheltered Workshop primarily serves people with physical and multiple disabilities such as people with spinal cord injury, head injury, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. We do consider on a case-to-case basis those with intellectual and sensory limitations.
- Applicants must be Singapore citizens or permanent residents. Admission is open to any race, language and religion.
- Applicants should be 16 years old and above.
- The applicant should have disabilities pertaining to physical conditions, ie physical or multiple disabilities.
- Applicants should be able to attend to the basic needs of daily living without assistance.
- The applicant should be able to focus on simple tasks with minimal supervision, and should not require nursing care.
- The applicant should be able to follow simple visual, written and/or verbal instructions and communicate basic needs with or without aid.
- The applicant should be able to focus on simple tasks with minimal supervision.
- All admissions must be medically certified by a qualified doctor confirming the applicant's condition and must have met the basic admission criteria listed above.
- Money and time concepts, ability in decision-making, sorting, classification sequencing, problem-solving and practical daily living knowledge are desirable abilities for admission into the Sheltered Workshop but are not deemed essential.
Transport
For those who have difficulty using public transport, SPD provides affordable and reliable transportation service with its fleet of specially-adapted vehicles. This service is open to beneficiaries coming to and from the SPD Ability Centre and their homes. Fees are chargeable but are subsidised depending on income level.
