Working with Teachers and Peers
To facilitate the integration and inclusion of students with physical disabilities in mainstream schools, SPD organises workshops for teachers on understanding physical disability and the challenges faced by children with physical disabilities. Basic wheelchair handling techniques are taught. Accessibility issues are highlighted as a major concern for the full participation of people with disabilities in mainstream activities.
Social workers also visit schools to work with the principals/teachers on how to improve the accessibility of the school environment or modify the classroom setting and lessons for students with physical disabilities.
Disability Resource Handbook for Teachers
A Disability Resource Handbook for Teachers was launched on 31 January 2009. It is available to all mainstream schools to guide teachers and other educators on how to integrate and include students with disabilities in the classroom and school at large.
Produced by SPD, the contents include information on different types of disabilities, tips on how to interact with the students and the challenges they and their families face because of their special needs as well as information on how the curriculum and environment can be modified to integrate disabled students in a mainstream classroom.
The softcopy of the handbook is available for download.
