Creating Disability Awareness at ITE College Central

SPD returned to the ITE College Central in Ang Mo Kio for a one-day roadshow on 12 January held during the student orientation programme. We aimed to share with students different mental health and special educational needs as well as the support services available.

This follows other visits made on a number of occasions to conduct activities to create greater awareness of the needs of persons with disabilities, and a disability simulation exercise done for one of the classes last April.

This round, the Advocacy & Outreach team, along with an assistive technology specialist, provided participating students advice and information on disabilities. The students were introduced to an array of assistive technology devices including alternative keyboards and mouse, environment controls and communication devices such as braille note taker and accessibility features in computer tablets.

Besides trying out the devices, many students and staff who visited our booth also put on blindfolds and tampered eye-wear to experience visual impairment, and played an interactive game to familiarise themselves with terms to use and avoid when referring to persons with disabilities.

The students were inquisitive and forthcoming during their interaction with our staff which made this another successful collaboration.
