Disability Awareness At Republic Polytechnic

25/07/2014

People at Republic Polytechnic Wellness Campaign

Republic Polytechnic (RP) organised a Wellness Campaign at their campus on 9 and 10 July with the aim of creating greater awareness and better understanding of persons with disabilities among their student population. More than a hundred students visited the SPD booth over the two-day event and heard from our Advocacy and Outreach colleagues on disability issues and participated in activities that highlighted the various challenges that people with disabilities face daily.

One of the activities required the students to put on blindfolds or tampered eyewear while performing certain tasks so as to simulate the experience of being visually impaired. Information booklets on different disabilities, wheelchair handling techniques as well as a guide on helping persons with visual impairments and interacting with those with disabilities were handed out at the roadshow.

The team also demonstrated the use of various assistive technology (AT) devices including alternative keyboards and alternative mouse. They also showed how accessibility features and communication apps on computer tablets aid people with disabilities in technology.

SPD looks forward to more collaboration with RP to help integrate students and staff with disabilities in its educational environment.
