NUS Undergraduates Lead by Example
Understanding the importance of transport accessibility in the rehabilitation and integration of people with disabilities, students from the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) College of Alice and Peter Tan (CAPT) decided to raise funds for SPD’s door-to-door transport programme.
The Heart2Climb Vertical Marathon which took place at their college last Saturday, 31 January, saw 125 participants conquering 17 floors of stairs for this worthy cause. Friendly exchanges also took place at the basketball and badminton courts where some 30 students pit their skills against athletes from the Wheelchair Basketball Association and Singapore Disability Sports Council.
Prior to the fundraiser, more than 20 CAPT students put aside their books on 16 January to host 20 clients from our Day Activity Centre. The students took them on a tour of their campus before serving them a scrumptious lunch. The finale was an entertaining sing-along session which even included a quirky dance routine from the students!
Following this visit, CAPT students made a trip down to SPD@Toa Payoh on 19 January to visit some of the elderly clients there.
CAPT has over 500 students and the college has a specific focus on community engagement where they conscientiously weave the theme of community engagement and active citizenship in their programmes.
We appreciate the students’ efforts and look forward to another round of partnership with them.
