Overnight Camp For DAC Clients
SPD volunteers and staff with DAC clients at the camp
To promote experiential learning, foster social interactions and enhance social skills for the Day Activity Centre's (DAC) clients, several SPD staff and volunteers came together to plan and organise an overnight camp that was fun and memorable for everyone.
What an exciting two-day-one-night it turned out to be for the 29 clients who participated in the camp which was held at the idyllic Aloha Resort in Loyang from 20 to 21 April. With the two days filled with fun and games, and a barbeque dinner, not many were thinking of home.
Planning the night out for 29 clients was not an easy task as all DAC clients require assistance in all aspects of activities of daily living including toileting and bathing. Hence, the support from the volunteers from Nanyang Polytechnic and Freedom Adventure Club (FAC) was truly invaluable.
As a volunteer at the camp, the experience has been just as enriching and exciting to myself as it was to the clients. The two-day long event provided more chances for me to interact with the clients and to have fun together while playing the games we organised. Seeing how the clients were so exhilarated during the games and how they put in so much effort during the team performances was very fulfilling to me. The appreciation and friendship that the clients reciprocated to us volunteers has also been more than I could ask for, said Chng Chin Soon, 34, team leader of FAC.
It was the first overnight camp for many DAC clients.
"When are we going again?" asked Ernest Wong, who looks forward to participating in more of such activities in the future.
Like Ernest, many of the clients will be holding onto these memories till the next adventure comes along.
