    With limited resources, volunteers play an important role in SPD as our programmes and services require that additional help to operate from time to time.  Here are some broad categories where voluntary work is periodically needed:

    • Administration
    • Client Wellness
    • Education and Training
    • Recreation
    • Rehabilitation

     

    You may wish to register your areas of interest in which you can support us in so that we can contact you when help is needed.

    Currently, we are looking for volunteers to assist in the following projects:

     

    Adults and Elderly

    Type of Help Sought

    Location, Frequency and Duration

    Requirements

    Befriender for a client in her 50's to spend time with her at home or around the neighbourhood. Client requires at least two female volunteers to care for her as she has slight mental health issues.

    - Ang Mo Kio area

    - 2 to 3 volunteers, middle-aged females preferred

    - Able to communicate in Mandarin

    Befriender for a client in his 70's. To spend time and keep him company.

    - Bishan area

    - At least once a month

    - Male volunteers preferred

    - Able to communicate in English

    Befriender for middle-aged male to teach him how to use social media, including the setting up of accounts, uploading content and managing the accounts, etc. This will be an avenue for leisure and publicise his busking skills. 

    - Bukit Batok area

    - Fortnightly

    - 1 to 2 volunteers 21 years old and above

    - Able to communicate in Mandarin

    Befriender for a wheelchair-using client in her 50's. She is extremely lonely and isolated at home. Client wishes for a volunteer who can visit and travel outdoors with her.

    - Choa Chu Kang area

    - One Saturday per month

    - 1 female volunteer between 30 to 45 years old preferred

    - Able to converse in English

    Befriender to teach a stroke survivor in his 40's basic life skills like e-mail, surfing the net, using mobile applications on a tablet etc.

    - Dawson Road area

    - Monthly

     

    - 1 volunteer between 20 to 50 years old

    - Able to communicate in English or Malay

    Befriender for client with cerebral palsy, scoliosis, right hand carpal tunnel syndrome in her 40's. To interact and travel outdoors with her.

    - Eunos Crescent area

    - Fortnightly, weekday afternoons

    - Female volunteer between 30 to 50 years old preferred

    - Secondary education

    - Able to communicate in English and Malay

    Befriender for client with spinal cord injury. To engage client in social interaction, head out to shopping malls, coffee shops etc.

    - Hougang area

    - 1 to 2 volunteers 21 years old and above

    - Able to communicate in English

    Befriender for a middle-aged stroke survivor. To keep her company as she feels extremely lonely when her husband and three children go off to work.

    - Hougang area

    - Monthly

    - 1 volunteer above 30 years old

    - Able to communicate in Mandarin

    Volunteer to visit client's home to teach him how to use Microsoft Office suite (especially Word and Excel) to help him prepare for possible home-based job opportunities.

    - Jalan Bukit Merah area

    - Frequency is negotiable

    - Start as soon as possible

    - 1 volunteer 

    - Able to communicate in English and Mandarin

    Befriender for elderly Malay client who survived a stroke and has mild dementia. To spend time, engage in conversations and travel outdoors  with him.

    - Potong Pasir area

     

    - 1 to 2 Malay volunteers 21 years old and above preferred

    - Able to communicate in English and Malay

    Befriender needed for Malay client and his daughter. Client is physically frail while daughter has mild cognitive impairment due to a childhood brain injury. Father and daughter require social interaction and emotional support.

    - Potong Pasir area

    - Fortnightly

    - 2 to 3 volunteers 21 years old and above

    - At least one volunteer has to be female

    - Able to communicate in Malay

    Hydrotherapy assistants to assist clients with disabilities during pool sessions.

    - Tiong Bahru area

    - Friday mornings

    - Able to commit for at least 3 months

    - Female volunteers preferred

    - Physically fit and have basic swimming skills

    - Possess good communication and interpersonal skills to befriend clients

    Befriender needed to spend time with elderly female client at her home. To engage in social interaction to relieve boredom and depressive mood.

    - Toa Payoh area

    - Female volunteers 21 years old and above

    - Able to communicate in Cantonese or Mandarin

    Volunteers to bring clients with disabilities out for walks around the neighbourhood.

    - Toa Payoh and Tiong Bahru areas

    - Weekdays

    - Able to commit for at least 3 months

    - Group of at least 5 pax

    - Physically fit to be able to push wheelchair users

    - Possess good communication and interpersonal skills to befriend clients

    Volunteers to conduct wellness activities, such as baking, gardening, art classes, sport clinics etc. for clients with disabilities.

    - Toa Payoh and Tiong Bahru areas

    - Ad-hoc

    - Group of at least 5 pax

    - Possess good communication and interpersonal skills to befriend clients

    - Able to conduct small interest group sessions for clients

    Befriender for client in her mid-30's who has severe cerebral palsy and speech impairment but is cognitively well-functioning. 

    - Woodlands area

    - Fortnightly

    - Able to commit long term

    - 2 to 3 volunteers 30 years old and above preferred

    - Able to communicate in English

    Befriender needed to interact and accompany elderly client and his wife.

    - Yishun area

    - Monthly

    - 1 volunteer 30 years old and above

    - Able to communicate in Mandarin

         

     

    Children

    Requirements

    Childminders to plan and engage children in play-based activities and ensure their safety.

    - Tiong Bahru, Bedok, Tampines and Jurong areas

    - Ad-hoc

    - Group of at least 3 pax

    - Enthusiastic and passionate about working with young children

    - Able to build and maintain positive relationships with children

    Volunteers to assist and support class teachers in teaching and preparing learning resources. Also to help take care of the children's individual needs

    - Jurong area

    - Between 30 to 35 years old

    - Possess good communication and interpersonal skills

    - Willing to learn and love children
