Recreation
There are many opportunities to volunteer to help in the social wellness of our beneficiaries.
Sports Programmes
Swimming
The therapy conducted in the water helps to improve the balance and muscle strength of people with disabilities. At the same time, the experience helps reduce stress and tension levels. Self-esteem and confidence will be raised through social interaction in this activity.
How you can help
Beneficiaries gain from the interaction with the volunteers, while at the same time allowing volunteers the opportunity to interact and learn more about the special needs and potential of people with disabilities.
Commitment
Five to six volunteers are needed for this programme. Preference will be given to those who can commit regularly for at least three months.
The swimming sessions are held every Friday from 11 am to 1 pm. Changes may be made to accommodate volunteers keen on helping in this area but who cannot fit into this time schedule.
Criteria
Volunteers in the swimming programme must be physically fit and able to swim. They should also be comfortable when helping with the dressing and toileting of people with physical disabilities.
The training officers will provide guidance and advice should volunteers encounter problems during the course of their voluntary work.
Ballgames
This activity encourages people with physical disabilities to develop an interest in ball games and lead a healthy and active lifestyle. It is largely held for the beneficiaries at the Day Activity Centre (DAC).
How you can help
Beneficiaries gain from interaction with the volunteers. At the same time, volunteers get the opportunity to interact and learn more about the special needs and potential of people with disabilities.
Commitment
This programme is held for two to three hours at least once a week with the possibility of extending it to weekends for the beneficiaries from the Production Workshop (PWS) and the Sheltered Workshop.
Those who are only able to commit on a one-time basis are also welcomed. However, the beneficiaries would gain from the relationship forged with those who can come on a regular basis.
This activity will commence when enough manpower is secured.
Criteria
Volunteers in this activity must be physically fit with an interest in sports. The training officers will provide guidance and advice should volunteers encounter problems during the course of their voluntary work.
Outings
Volunteers to help plan, organise and sponsor outings for people with physical disabilities are always a welcome. These are ad hoc projects in which help is always welcomed.
