Celebrating Mums with Love and Learning at SPD
Each May, we honour the love, sacrifices and strength of mothers everywhere. It is a day that not only shines a light on the role of motherhood in our society, but also strengthens the emotional bonds between mother and child — especially when they share meaningful time together.
At SPD’s Early Intervention Programme for Infants & Children (EIPIC), the occasion becomes a special opportunity for love and learning. The children are always excited to express their appreciation for their mums, and this year is no exception. From handmade cards to thoughtful gifts, they poured their creativity and emotions into surprises for one of their favourite people.

Each activity has been thoughtfully designed by our teachers and therapists to embed learning opportunities into the fun. While they are creating the gifts, they are also developing essential motor, communication, and cognitive skills.
“This Mother’s Day, we guided the children in making cards that involved tearing and pasting coloured paper, and writing their names,” explained Seah Phey San, centre manager at SPD@Jurong East.
“These tasks may seem simple, but they support the development of bilateral coordination and finger dexterity. Writing their names in a designated space also fosters a sense of ownership and builds their visual spatial awareness.”
The children are encouraged to follow instructions and use language to request the materials they need. This relaxed approach allows the children to learn and practice essential skills in a stress-free and enjoyable environment.
Among them is 5-year-old Jesse Lim who could hardly wait to talk about his mummy and the special surprise he prepared for her. He shared with us that the playground is his favorite place to go with his mummy and would love to go with her to TimeZone soon.
“My mummy shoots at the dinosaurs with the water gun at TimeZone. It’s so much fun!” Jesse beamed.
For his card, Jesse picked his favorite colours – red, orange, yellow, green and blue. “Because they remind me of the rainbow!” he explained proudly.
Jesse and his friends at SPD@Jurong East have created more than just cards. These colourful, handmade pieces are powerful expressions of love – heartfelt gifts from little hands to the person who mean the world to them.

To all the incredible mothers out there, Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at SPD!
