It’s the time of the year again where red and white buntings, images of Singapore icons and the national flag were put up in our centres for National Day – the nation’s biggest birthday bash of the year! Every year, we come together to celebrate this joyous occasion as a community.

SPD Ability Centre

We kicked off the celebrations at SPD Ability Centre on 7 August with a mass assembly. Children from the early intervention programme, teachers, caregivers and clients from the Day Activity Centre (DAC) and Sheltered Workshop as well as volunteers gathered to sing the national anthem and recited the pledge. No National Day celebration is complete without songs such as Stand Up For Singapore and Home.

Eight students from Zhangde Primary School who, with the guidance of their two teachers, helped as masters of ceremony and game masters at the activity booths which made more meaningful.

Several fun and games around planned for the National Day celebrations.

“It was nice to see the primary school students coming to help at our event! They did so well,” said Ng Qiu Yan, one of the EIPIC teachers.

The children and their caregivers also soaked in the cheery atmosphere with quizzes, games, snacks and craft activities planned to the national day theme.

As a working adult with a tight schedule, this has event allowed to create tighter bonds with our children. It was heartwarming to see my child play with his friends. The celebrations reminded me of the harmony we are so blessed to have in our country,” said Mr Lu Dongyi who attended the event with his son Walter.

Members of Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Young Advocating for the Younger (YAY) Club delighted the participants with a puppet performance too.

Vintage Games at DAC

DAC clients played their part in the snacks and games booths as volunteers.

On the eve of National Day, more than 50 DAC clients took us down memory lane with old-school treats and delights such as kacang puteh, ondeh ondeh and potong ice-cream.

Instead of the usual yellow uniform, the clients donned red t-shirts to commemorate the occasion.
Some of the clients were involved in manning the food and activity booths and it was certainly a memorable experience for many.
“I was happy to help out and get to interact with more people at SPD,” said Chua Kim Luan, a DAC client who helped out at the snacks booth.

SPD@Jurong

SPD@Jurong celebrated with a birthday cake for Singapore!

SPD@Jurong also celebrated National Day on 8 August with more than 50 clients and caregivers joining in the fun. A singalong session was conducted and the children waved their light sticks and Singapore flags while singing to songs such as Home, We Will Get There and One People, One Nation, One Singapore.

The three-hour celebration was packed with food, songs and games. Caregivers also valued the opportunity to see their children interact with their peers and teachers.

“We love coming together to celebrate National Day. It is heartwarming to see the children and their caregivers enjoying the activities. We believe that it fostered a deeper bond between them,” said Winnie Lim, centre manager of SPD@Jurong.
