“Hardworking, willing to go above and beyond his duties, always learning and cheerful”—these are how his colleagues at MCS Advisory Group and SPD professionals who had worked with him describe 61-year-old Mr Larry Chong. His journey to open employment after an acquired disability is a testament to the importance of a supportive ecosystem, where the dedication of the individual, together with supportive mindset of employers, and the guidance from professionals all come together to open doors for jobseekers with disabilities. Mr Chong’s story highlights how the collective will and efforts of a community can transform many lives.
Mr Chong was diagnosed with weakness and numbness in his lower limbs many years ago which requires him to use elbow crutches to move above. Additionally, the lack of dexterity in his fingers limits him to typing with only his index fingers on each hand, making many computer tasks challenging and laborious. The family gets by financially as both his wife and son are working, but Mr Chong was determined to find work and contribute to the household expenses.
When he started on his job search, Mr Chong faced numerous rejections from employers. Other than accessibility and productivity considerations due to his disability, his age and limited experience in the use of the computer did not put him in favour. Recognising that he required support, Mr Chong enrolled in SPD’s Employment Support Programme (ESP) in April 2023.
At the ESP, Mr Chong was introduced to job-seeking 101 of the 2020s. His employment support specialist Brenden Sim started him off with practical skills such as resume writing, grooming, and how to ace that interview. He also helped Mr Chong build positive relationships with potential employers and advised him on navigating potential workplace challenges.
The efforts paid off, and in July 2023 Mr Chong was matched to a job opening at the MCS Advisory Group, a branch representing insurance and financial planning service provider, Manulife (Singapore) Pte Ltd. Though it was initially for a month-long contract, it was the break that Mr Chong needed. When he started in the job, Mr Chong realised it was also the ideal environment that he would have wanted.
The MCS Advisory Group workplace was already designed with accommodations to the needs of persons with mobility challenges. From auto-sensor doors to accessible washrooms, the office environment is a testament to the importance of inclusivity. On top of that, Mr Chong’s employer ensured that clear paths were made in the office, where there are no files and boxes, so that they would not become trip hazards, a thoughtful gesture that not only benefit Mr Chong but everyone in the office as well.
Mr Chong’s colleagues were also supportive and helped him to assimilate into the team quickly. He felt very much a part of the team and could carry out his duties as a telemarketer with ease. Mr Chong’s manager and direct supervisor, Mr Daniel Chong, lauded his work ethics: “With a positive attitude and an earnest personality that could be felt even over the phone, Larry seeks to understand the needs of those he calls and secure appointments for them to meet his colleagues at the office. Going above and beyond, Larry takes it upon himself too to welcome at the building lobby those who turn up for the meetings.”
Recognising his commitment and potential, Mr Chong’s employer provided him with a mobile tablet and laptop to help enhance his efficiency at work, and is in the process of applying for a grant to obtain a motorised wheelchair for him. This will help improve his safety and accessibility at work.
Ms May Chan (above), the founder of MCS Advisory Group, emphasises the importance of inclusive hiring in their company culture: “We believe that everyone deserves a chance to contribute their skills and talents, regardless of physical limitations. Hiring inclusively isn’t just about doing the right thing—it’s about enriching our workplace with diverse perspectives and experiences. Larry has shown incredible resilience and dedication, and we’re proud to have him on our team.”
From just a month-long contract work, it has been more than a year now for Mr Chong and he is thriving in his role. He takes pride in his work and is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to his family’s situation: “I am truly thankful for the support – from SPD to my manager and the team at MCS Advisory Group. The trust and guidance they provided have helped me to perform my best and I feel confident with my abilities. It’s a great feeling to know I can contribute.”
