SINGAPORE, 25 April 2017 – Golfers at Raffles County Club last Friday afternoon wondered about the 40 blue and red tubs surrounding Hole 2 of the golf course. They were even more surprised to see a hole more than double the size of a normal one at Hole 18 which they were told to putt using just one hand. These were among a multitude of novelty challenges that the golfers took on to raise funds for people with disabilities.

This was SPD’s second charity golf tournament, and with strong support from the business community, $300,000 was raised through sponsorship of 28 golf flights, donations as well as the participation of 112 golfers in 10 novelty challenges across the 18-hole golf course. Emeritus Senior Minister, Goh Chok Tong was the Guest-of-Honour of the charity golf.

SPD President Ms Chia Yong Yong said: “While there is elasticity to people’s ability to give, and therefore SPD’s ability to raise funds, the challenges people with disabilities face don’t rise and fall with the economy. Their challenges are real and constant, in good times and in bad. We are therefore thankful for the continued friendship and support of our participants and donors, and grateful to all of them for believing in our work and for partnering us in helping people with disabilities in becoming independent and self-reliant.”

At the after-game dinner, she also thanked the Organising Committee helmed by Dr Janice Khoo, and her team comprising Ms Cheong Yoke Keng, Mr Joe Dorai, Ms Maureen Goh, Mr Alvin Seck, Mr Yeo Teck Guan, and the SPD Fundraising Committee Chairman Mr Tan Soo Nan for their efforts in organising the successful fundraiser.

Ms Janetta Tan, who benefitted from SPD’s Transition Programme for Employment and a mouth painting enthusiast, presented Mr Goh with one of her canvas painting which she took months to paint as a token of appreciation for his support of people with disabilities and for gracing the event.
