It was a sea of purple at Hong Lim Park on 15 November as more than 5,000 people gathered to show solidarity for inclusion of persons of disabilities in mainstream society. For the second year running, the Purple Parade was organised to raise awareness of the special needs community.

SPD was one of the 80 participating organisations this year. SPD President Ms Chia Yong Yong led a 50-member strong marching contingent that consisted of staff and clients from the Sheltered Workshop and Day Activity Centre. Marching to the theme of SPD Hatters, the contingent was bedecked in purple and wearing party hats and carrying clappers and balloons. This was symbolic of the many roles that SPD has played over the last 50 years. From community care provider and social support agency to resource partner and disability advocate, SPD takes on these roles with the aim of helping people with disabilities become a part of mainstream society.

“It was my first time at the parade. I am happy to participate in this event with so many people showing support for people with disabilities,” said Lee Boon Kian from the SPD Sheltered Workshop who was part of the SPD contingent.

The SPD booth which showcased assistive technology (AT) devices also drew the attention of the public. Alternative keyboards and mouse as well as software that enable computer access were on display at the booth. The message that with a little help and accommodation, people with disabilities can be a part of the community was not lost with the parade-goers.
