Reaching Out to the Community

As part of our work to integrate people with disabilities into mainstream society, we also focus on advocating greater acceptance at the workplace, in school and the community at large.

Lunchtime Talks
Staff from risk solutions group, ACR Capital Holdings, will be taking some of our elderly clients from SPD@Toa Payoh out for an outing soon. Hence, we visited them at their office during lunch time on 27 May to talk on elder care management.

SPD@Toa Payoh manager Sharon Chen gave 19 of its staff a quick rundown on the kind of support that we extend to people with disabilities before physiotherapist Winson Teng and occupational therapist Michele Vicencio demonstrated basic transfer techniques and one-handed techniques for upper body dressing. They also explained the use of some assistive technology (AT) devices. Under the guidance of the therapists, the participants had some hands-on practice to reinforce what they learnt at the session.

SPD’s e-Accessibility manager Ivan Tan was at Deutsche Bank on 8 June to share with more than 60 staff on how AT can help integrate people with disabilities into mainstream society.

SPD at SINDA Youth Leaders Seminar
Our executive director, Mr Abhimanyau Pal, and the Advocacy & Public Education team were at the Singapore Indian Development Association’s (SINDA) Youth Leaders Seminar (SYLS) on 4 June to talk about disability.

They were joined by Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation scholars Bryan Chong and Josiah Ong who shared their stories and challenges they face, and engaged in a candid dialogue with the youth leaders.

Hello to Residents of Bedok
We were happy to be invited to the annual “Love My Daddy Block Party” at Bedok North Avenue 1 on 5 June where we took the opportunity to meet up with the residents and grassroots leaders including Mr Shamsul Kamar, Adviser to the Aljunied GRC.

It was also our first time meeting up with the residents and was instantly warmed by their hospitality.

“We would like to thank the organisers for giving us this platform to meet the residents. Many were curious about us and we were glad to have had this opportunity to share with them what we do,” said Kunal Ghosh, who is overseeing the new centre.

“We look forward to serving the community when we start operating at SPD@Bedok in a few months’ time,” he added.

The centre, which is located at blocks 521 and 522 Bedok North Avenue 1, will support children with special needs under the Early Intervention Programme for Infants and Children.
