Close to 20 SPD beneficiaries performed alongside more than 30 popular local and foreign artistes to raise $4.13 million at the SPD Charity Show 2017 on 19 March. The show, held at Mediacorp’s new theatre, was graced by Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen.

Opening performance

Mediacorp artistes Bryan Wong and Hong Ling opened the show with its theme song, performing on the piano and flute respectively. Kate Pang and Getai Challenge winner Desmond Ng provided the vocals while accompanied by young soprano soloist Lauren Yeo and SPD Youth Aspiration Award winner Samuel Lim who was on the guzheng.

Best female drummer in the making

Another SPD Youth Aspiration Award winner, 13-year-old Anastasia Chieng, showcased her musical talent with a solo performance on the electone, violin and drums. A visibly delighted Anastasia shared that she aspires to be the best female drummer in Singapore.

Mouth art – A tale on inclusion

Characters from one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, Journey to the West, came to life in the form an innovative mouth art performance which carried an important message on inclusion.

The audience was clearly delighted with the skit by (from left) Michelle Tay, Jeremy Chan, Rayson Tan, Terence Cao, SPD Sheltered Workshop craftsman Mohammad Hussain and Ya Hui.

Cooking up a storm

Singapore’s celebrity chefs Eric Teo, Heman Tan, Pung Lu Tin and Charlie Tham drew close to $58,000 in donations at the show’s outdoor segment at Nex Shopping Mall. For a donation, shoppers got to taste the dishes prepared by the chefs on-site.

The chefs were assisted by Mediacorp artistes Chen Han Wei, Elvin Ng, Romeo Tan, Felicia Chin and Seraph Sun who donned aprons to help prepare and serve 200 portions of the cuisines whipped up by each of the chefs. Radio 97.2FM deejay Marcus Chin also surprised his colleagues at Nex shopping mall to lend his support.

More than words

SPD client Soh Whee Lian, who struggled with and successfully overcame his depressed state after losing the ability to walk two years ago, put up a heartfelt rendition of <<谢谢你>> or Thank You. He was joined by fellow SPD client Kamaruddin bin Ahmad and Mediacorp artistes Calvin Soh, Tay Ping Hui and Desmond Tan.

Perfect aim on the Grasshopper

Our client and para-archer Joyce Chan got the audience on the edge of their seats as she drew her arrows on the popular canto-pop trio from Hong Kong, Grasshopper.

They pulled all stops to entertain the audience and went on to delight fans with a three-song medley complete with their signature energetic dance routines.

Taiwanese stars lend their support

Visually-impaired sisters Zhang Yu Ling and Zhang Yu Xia moved many in the audience with their heavenly voice.

Wang Yi Ling, a veteran Hokkien singer from Taiwan who won the 27th Golden Melody Best Female Hokkien Singer Award, surprised her fans in Singapore with one of her most popular Hokkien songs.

American-Taiwanese singer, songwriter, rapper, actor and entrepreneur Wilber Pan stole hearts with his dance moves and raps.

Stories of hope

It was a heartwarming moment when Issac’s mum shared with Mediacorp artistes Kate Pang and Quan Yifeng on what he learnt and how he much improved while enrolled in SPD’s Building Bridges EIPIC Centre, as well as her wishes for him.

Karen and Alvin, who are trainees at SPD’s Sheltered Workshop, also shared with veteran actress Xiang Yun and hosts Huang Zijiao and Quan Yifeng their aspirations for the future.

The finale

The evening ended on a high note with the nine-member choir from our Day Activity Centre singing “Proud of You” along with young soprano soloist Lauren Yeo. The choir which started in 2008 learning and practicing simple songs to build their confidence in vocal expressions had come a long way under the guidance of Ms Frances Chua and other volunteers from VocalHearts.

Funds raised from the show will go towards helping over 5,000 people with physical, developmental and sensory disabilities whom SPD is currently serving.
