2014, being SPD’s 50th year, was a busy one. We celebrated our golden jubilee with a series of events starting with “Journey to the West” in May 2014, a 20 km overnight walk from SPD Ability Centre to SPD@Jurong where we witnessed the official opening ceremony of the centre.

In July, we refreshed our corporate identity with a change in name and logo to better reflect the work that we do to serve people beyond physical disabilities. The year ended in a fitting way with the SPD Gala Dinner in November with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as our honoured guest.

The busy year saw staff from all quarters being roped in to help manage and co-ordinate activities which were organised on top of regular work. The SPD Staff Retreat on 13 March 2015 was therefore a welcome break as everyone took the opportunity to re-charge and enjoy each other’s company at the HomeTeamNS in Bukit Batok.

A range of activities was available for staff to participate in – from archery and air-rifle to laser-tag, bowling and an art-and-craft workshop. However, it was not just all fun and games. Senior social worker Junaidah Baharawi conducted a lively session on ‘Achieving Effective Teamwork’ after lunch. More recreational activities ensued with the screening of the acclaimed local film “Ilo Ilo” and a karaoke session.

The one-day retreat, a first for SPD involving all staff simultaneously, was not just a day of fun and bonding, it was also a sign of appreciation from the Board and management for the hard work put in by all the staff in the year.
