Using gym and specialised equipment for therapy is part of clinical rehabilitation for many of our clients at SPD’s rehabilitation centres to help in strength and flexibility training. Hence, we were happy to receive a donation of 12 gym equipment from fitness and wellness group, True Group. The equipment are now used at SPD Ability Centre, SPD@Tampines and SPD@Toa Payoh.

The Group’s founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Patrick Wee, and National Council of Social Service CEO Mr Sim Gim Guan, were at SPD@Toa Payoh on 2 March to visit the clients and give out oranges during the Lunar New Year festive season. They were accompanied by Rehabilitation Services’ Senior Assistant Director, Mr Jeffrey Chin, who said: “The equipment that True Group donated to us replaces some of our older ones that we have. We welcome them as valuable resources and would like to thank True Group for their generosity.”

Mr Dolkifi Bin Shariff is one of the clients who receives therapy at SPD@Toa Payoh. He uses the gym and rehabilitation equipment such as the treadmill during his therapy session at the centre twice a week. The 61-year-old was diagnosed with Cauda Equina Syndrome, a relatively rare but serious condition that results in extreme pressure and swelling of the nerves at the end of the spinal cord. Having attended therapy sessions consistently at SPD since July 2014, he is now able to walk more independently with a quad stick. He can balance better as well as walk faster and for a longer distance as well.
