Sickly, Powerless, Dependent, Jobless, and Unworthy.
These are just some of the harmful labels that have constantly been associated with persons with disabilities in various forms of mainstream media, and unfortunately, they are not uncommon.
Negative attitudes or perceived negative ones towards persons with disabilities can become a barrier towards the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the community. The insecurities that people with disabilities feel about how they are perceived are exacerbated by society’s attitudes and perceptions of them. Over the years, persons with disabilities are often viewed as having limited capabilities and contributions to society, whereas in reality, there are many who have defied stereotypes and continue to lead very meaningful and fulfilling lives.
In conjunction with International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on 3 December, we collaborated with SMRT to launch the UNLABEL campaign through sponsored media space at various MRT stations across the island from now till 25 December.
Through this campaign, we want to encourage the public to change perceptions and attitudes towards persons with disabilities by focusing on the abilities and achievements of those who have defied these stereotypes.
The posters portray two persons with disabilities who defied odds and chased their dreams. We call them rebels. One, a photographer who captures beautiful moments and landscapes despite having to manoeuvre with his crutches to capture a single shot. The other, a hairdresser who works around her limitations and figures ways to create winning styles.
Meet more of our rebels on https://takeaction.spd.org.sg/meet-the-rebels/. Or if you know someone who has defied disability to achieve their dreams, introduce them to us here https://takeaction.spd.org.sg
