Volunteers from all walks of life organised activities this past few weeks to keep our clients engaged and active.
Singapore Soka Association Community Integration Programme
About 20 volunteers from Singapore Soka Association started their monthly community integration programme with 10 elderly clients from SPD@Toa Payoh on 22 July.
The volunteers accompanied the elderly clients to a nearby supermarket for grocery shopping, an activity that most of the clients would not have been able to independently accomplish due to mobility issues. The session then ended at the centre with games and singing.
The clients take turns to go through this community integration programme as a form of training to help optimise their personal, social and vocational competencies to enable them to live more independently in the community.
Other activities in the pipeline include accessing public transport, leisure and recreational activities, development of living skills, mobility training and social interaction skills.
“We hope that the experience that they gain through these integration activities would give them the confidence to step out of their comfort zone and build up their social and living skills with the help of their therapists and these dedicated Soka volunteers,” said Sharon Chen, SPD@Toa Payoh’s centre manager.
Credit Suisse Sports Day 2016
Volunteers from Credit Suisse Group AG held their second Sports Day for clients from our Day Activity Centre (DAC) on 23 July, the first being organised in September 2011.
In true spirit of the Olympic Games, the 44 DAC participants gave their best, with assistance of 15 Credit Suisse volunteers – from their warm up exercises to the various races and the obstacle courses.
At the end of the day, friendly competition and sportsmanship created a distinct bond between the clients and volunteers.
Freedom Adventure Club Outing to Woodlands Waterfront Park
Seventeen students from SPD’s Education Programme, and their family members, joined volunteers from the Freedom Adventure Club (FAC) for a day outdoors at Woodlands Waterfront Park on 30 July. It was a relaxing time in the sun for everyone, away from the city’s hustle and bustle, as they took in the picturesque view.
“It was a tiring day but we still had so much fun enjoying the view and taking pictures at the Park,” said FAC volunteer Ronnie Soh.
