SPD Ability Walk & Run Returns to The Singapore River with Hybrid Event

SINGAPORE, 17 August 2022 – A viral infection to the brain which happened after training for a charity run 24 years ago upended Terance Low’s life. After a two-week coma, Terance woke up to find that the condition had affected his ability to walk, talk and perform daily activities. But today, the 47-year-old is gathering his courage to pick up where he left off to participate in a charity walk, something which he did not manage to complete back then.

While memories of the past continue to affect Terance, he is fuelled by a strong resolve to fulfill his wish and to give back to the community. With renewed courage, Terance and his father, who is also his caregiver, will be participating in the SPD Ability Walk & Run 2022 on 3 September.

Back with a hybrid version this year, the SPD Ability Walk & Run 2022 will kick off with a physical event along the Singapore River on Saturday, 3 September, and will be complemented by a virtual walk from 4 to 24 September.

Terance, who attends SPD’s Day Activity Centre (DAC), hopes that his participation can help to garner more support for his friends at the DAC and other persons with disabilities whom SPD serves. SPD aims to raise $200,000 from the initiative with the funds raised going towards programmes that empower persons with disabilities in areas like early intervention, rehabilitation, employment support, assistive technology, and social support.

Joining Terance at the Walk are trainees from SPD’s Sheltered Workshop.
