About ‘Accessibility Features of Mainstream Devices – iOS’

Overview

As technology becomes an integral part of our daily lives, more people from all walks of life will be drawn to using mobile devices like smartphones, tablets, and computers. These can include the very young, the very old, people that are new to computers and mobile devices, and also people with disabilities and special needs.
To make these devices work for as wide a range of people as possible, manufacturers have incorporated accessibility features into their products to reduce the barriers to using a device. In fact, accessibility features can be viewed as tools with which users are better able to access their devices. These features may include vision features to specifically help those with visual impairments, including blindness, colour blindness, and low vision, hearing features for people with hearing impairments including deafness in one or both ears, physical or motor skill features, for users with physical impairments, including limited coordination or range of motion, and learning challenges, including autism and dyslexia.
However, accessibility should not be seen as limited to only disabled users, but in a more holistic context, can prove beneficial to everyone. With this in mind, there are many accessibility features in smart devices that can enable users to more easily use their devices.
In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the accessibility features available to the Apple iOS suite of devices, namely the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

Course Objectives

 Gain a general understanding of the crucial role accessibility features play in mainstream devices
 Learn to navigate to and activate key built-in accessibility features within iOS devices
 Try your hand at customising the iOS interface to help persons with disabilities overcome challenges faced in iOS device use
 Demonstrate informed application of these accessibility features to meet the specific needs of your own students/clients/charges

3. Understanding Vision Features
4. Understanding Hearing Features
5. Understanding Physical and fine motor features
6. Learning Features and their variety of uses

Participants will have the opportunity to engage in:
√ hands-on experiential learning’ time to explore iOS accessibility features
√ exchange of ideas regarding real-life case studies in small group discussions
√ opportunities for professional networking

About the Training Organisation

The Specialised Assistive Technology Centre (SATC) in SPD provides assessments and training for people with disabilities who need Assistive Technology. It also provides training for professionals in VWOs and other organisations who are working with these PWDs. The ATC team comprises specialists from therapy, educational and engineering backgrounds who have worked with individuals who need Assistive Technologies from a range of disability groups. ‘Accessibility Features of Mainstream Devices – iOS’ is part of the ‘Accessibility Features Training Series’ that the SATC offers to provide practitioners with the necessary skills to begin using accessibility features in mainstream devices with their clients, patients, students, co-workers and more.
