How have your priorities evolved?

I was an occupational therapist in the acute care setting for nine years. I worked hard and was passionate about making changes to lives around me. I knocked off work late every day even after my son was born. Even on weekends, my team would often message me about work matters.

What prompted you to leave your previous job?

Along the way, I realised that I was missing out on the important milestones in my son’s life. I started feeling guilty as I could not spend quality time with him nor understand him. Especially when I found out that the nanny knew more about his preferences and habits than me. He was growing up quickly and I was worried that he might not grow close to me anymore. At that time, my in-laws also developed some health issues too. I was at a life stage where my priorities have shifted, and so I decided to make the change.

Did you find work-life balance through SPD Therapy Hub?

During the hiring process, SPD took time to understand who I am, what my needs were and where my career preferences and interests lie. Now, I work in a three-day work week arrangement in a programme that helps persons with acquired disabilities return to the workforce. I get to pick up my son earlier from after-school on some days and could spend time with him on simple things like going to the playground or guiding him in his homework.

I might have missed out on some parts of my son’s first five years but I am more involved now.

I find joy in what I do now at SPD as I can be the mother I want to be whilst still building up my career.
