Walking is good for your heart, your head and your wallet, yet, it could possibly be one of the most under-rated exercises. Let’s look at the wonders walking has on our body and mind.
1) Strengthens the Bones
Our bones tend to weaken with age. But we can build stronger bones if we walk regularly. This low-impact exercise prevents loss of bone density, thereby reducing the risk of osteoporosis, fracture, and injury. Since bones determine our framework, stronger and healthier bones also help to improve posture, stamina and balance.
2) Eases Joint Pain
Some studies have found that walking reduces arthritis-related pain, and that walking 8 to 10km weekly can even prevent arthritis from occurring. Walking protects the joints — especially the knees and hips, which are most susceptible to osteoarthritis — by lubricating them and strengthening the muscles that support them.
3) Lose Weight
Harvard researchers looked at 32 obesity-promoting genes in over 12,000 people to determine how much these genes actually contribute to body weight. They discovered that, among the study participants who walked briskly for about an hour a day, the effects of those genes were cut in half.
4) Reduces Stress
Walking can help reduce stress levels by improving circulation and channelling nutrients and oxygen to the cells. It also stimulates the nervous system receptors and decreases the production of the stress hormones. Breathing in and out while walking also helps to breathe out the tension.
5) Stimulates Creativity
Whether racking your brain for a solution to a problem at work or an inspiration for your assignments, walking can get your creative juices flowing. A recent study published in Frontiers in Neuroscience found that walking improved both convergent and divergent thinking, the two types associated with enhanced creativity.
6) Builds Social Support
