For Kee Choon and Ziying, their relationship has been a journey of love, embracing differences, and finding strength in each other. Approaching their fourth wedding anniversary, this couple proves that love that transcends geographical boundaries and societal norms.
Ziying hesitated initially about entering a relationship with Kee Choon, whose left leg is slightly shorter than his right due to a bone tumor many years ago. He uses crutches to get around.
They got to know each other through a dating app, and Kee Choon was upfront about his disability. After meeting him in-person for the first time, she had reservations about what dating someone with a physical disability would entail. Despite her reservations, Ziying decided to approach the situation and friendship with an open mind, thanks to the encouragement of her best friend. Little did she know that this decision would lead to a connection with Kee Choon, dispelling any doubts about their compatibility.
As time went by, Kee Choon’s resilience and plucky personality continued to impress Ziying.
A memorable chapter in their love story unfolded during a trip to a scenic lake in Taiping, Malaysia. Ziying had envisioned cycling together but was uncertain if it was a suitable activity for Kee Choon, due to his mobility challenges. To her surprise, Kee Choon, with his adaptive cycling shoes, demonstrated his ability to ride independently, showcasing his resourcefulness and adaptability to different situations.
In the face of adversities, including being geographically separated by the cross border during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kee Choon demonstrated ingenuity. He researched the shortest distance between Singapore and Johor Bahru, and orchestrated a heartfelt reunion to meet Ziying “in-person” by using a friend’s telephoto lens.
Navigating societal expectations and family concerns, the couple faced their fair share of skepticism. Ziying’s parents, initially worried about Kee Choon’s ability to care for their daughter. However, a family trip provided the perfect opportunity for Kee Choon to prove his devotion and abilities, winning their hearts over.
Similarly, Kee Choon was worried but found acceptance and strong support among Ziying’s family and friends when given the opportunity to know him better.
Addressing misconceptions about caregiving roles, Ziying emphasised that their partnership is a mutual exchange of support, and Kee Choon actively contributes to their relationship and every aspect of their lives, debunking the misconception that individuals with disabilities are solely dependent on their partners. Kee Choon humorously adds his superior culinary skills over his wife’s to the mix, challenging stereotypes about individuals with disabilities.
Looking to the future, Kee Choon advocates for self-empowerment, urging others with disabilities to focus on their strengths and embrace their true potential. Ziying encourages an open heart and mind, reminding others to look beyond preconceived notions and see the person for who they truly are. Their decision to be a part of UNLABEL 2023 promoting inclusivity stems from a shared commitment to challenge societal norms. Despite the couple’s aversion to being photographed, the couple believes in the campaign’s cause, and hopes that their story inspires others to approach love with an open heart, fostering a society that celebrates diversity.
